What is the library's noise policy?

Are people allowed to talk on the first/second/third floor? Where is a quiet place to study in the library?

Answer

We want to create an environment conducive to all styles of individual study and group work in the library. Our guidelines for volume in the library are:

  • On the first and second floors, conversation at a normal volume is allowed. This environment is conducive to group work and for people who study better with environmental stimulation.
  • The third floor is designated for silent study, so any conversation should be kept to an absolute minimum. This environment is conducive to individual study and for people who study better with very little environmental stimulation.
  • On all three floors, headphones or earbuds are required for listening to music or videos. This type of sound cannot be played out loud in any open areas of the library. Headphones are available to check out at the circulation desk.

A few more tips on noise in the library:

  • Study rooms are a great way to create a quiet space or a space where you can work in groups without disturbing others. BUT study rooms are not soundproof - loud conversations or sound from music or videos can be heard outside the study room.
  • The landings in the main stairwell, though they may seem private, actually carry sound, so conversations on the phone or with others in those areas can be heard clearly on the floors above and below.
  • As a courtesy, please set all mobile device notifications to vibrate or silent while in the library.
