How do I request a book or article through Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?

Answer

There are several ways to place an interlibrary loan. If you find a resource while searching the library catalog or databases, you should see 1. Access to the print or full text, or 2. an option to request the resource through HELIN or interlibrary loan.

If you find a resource outside of the library, such as in a Google, Google Scholar, or another search tool outside of the library, you should search for the book in our catalog or for the article in our databases or journal search.

If you search the book catalog, it will default to showing you books that are available through Salve and our HELIN partners. If you see "At HELIN Libraries" in a book record, you can click on the book's title and place a request.

If you're not finding what you need through the book catalog's default Salve/HELIN search, click on "Retain filters" and "Libraries Worldwide.

Then when you see the book you want in this Libraries Worldwide catalog search results, click on the title and "Request thru Interlibrary Loan." The form will open, already filled out with the book's information and your credentials.

If you search the library's article searchbox on the homepage, you'll be searching our EBSCOhost databases.

When you see an article you're interested in, click on "Access options."

When you click the "Find full text/Request this item, the tool will look to see if the article is in any of the library's other databases. If it is, it will open the article in another database. If not, it will take you to a screen that tells you it couldn't find the article, with an option to place an interlibrary loan request.

The article information and your credentials should be automatically filled out in the form.

If you complete all of the above searches and confirm that the library does not have access, you can fill out an interlibrary loan request

After you click submit, you can check on the status of your ILL request through your library account. You will receive an email when the material is available.
